After the 1936 Olympics the stadium near Berlin was used by the German Army. In December of 1940 I was born in the Olympic Athletes housing area in the same dorm where Jessie Owens had stayed and that is why my mother was under the false assumption that I would turn out to be an athlete.
I experienced and witnessed horrible things during the war and after the war when East Germany was under Russian occupation; all of which had a tremendous impact on my perception of life. In 1953, my mother and I escaped to West Berlin.
For my sixteenth birthday my mother gave me my first camera and a box full of smoke and fire damaged film from a fire at a photo shop where she worked. I began taking photos of everything that moved, and didnt move, because my mother was able to process all the photos at work for free. I was hooked on photography. After graduating from the School of Higher Arts in Stuttgart, Germany I was able to get a job as a photographers assistant. Within two years I was promoted to head photographer of the company. It was the largest photography studio in Ulm so that was quite an achievement. I specialized in portrait, wedding and technical photography.
In 1960, I emigrated to St Paul, Minnesota. I worked at the Kenneth Wright Photo Studio and was the only photographer at the scene when the St. Paul Hotel burned down in the middle of winter. I got some fantastic shots of firemen with icicles on their helmets and fire trucks and equipment covered with ice.
I enlisted in the US Army in 1961 to avoid being drafted. Because I voluntarily joined the army, I was promised the opportunity to be stationed in Europe. I was pleased to find out that I was being sent to Ulm, Germany where I had lived prior to going to America. I became the battalion photographer for the 1st Infantry Division.
After my discharge from the Army I became a freelance photographer and have continued to do so since then. Prior to moving to Cancun, I lived in Phoenix, Arizona where I specialized in shooting fitness models and runway shows. I also had the opportunity to shoot the magnificent landscape in Arizona. I have had a number of my photographs of models and landscapes published in local magazines.
My wife and I fell in love with Cancun after vacationing here for the past ten years and moved here permanently in September, 2009. I now have the opportunity to spend my days doing what I love......photography. Cancun is truly the pearl of Mexico and has an endless array of beautiful landscapes, wild life and architecture, in addition to the beautiful people. There is an endless supply of subjects for my photography.
A very good thing resulted from my dismal childhood experiences in Germany......I have a great appreciation of all the beauty that exists in the world and have the opportunity to illustrate that with my photography. It brings me great joy and allows me to share that joy with others.
